Among the scenes which are deeply impressed on my mind, none exceed in sublimity the primeval forests undefaced by the hand of man. No one can stand in these solitudes unmoved, and not feel that there is more in man than the mere breath of his body.

OK, so it was the first proper summery day today. I slept with my window open last night, and I woke up to the smell of sap and pollen. By mid-day, my whole room was streaming with sunlight and was filled with a flowery perfume. There aren't that many flowers near me, so Lord knows where the floral fragrance came from, but it was nice. I spent my afternoon lazily doing Finnish exercises in my 'textbook'. There are some really dodgy examples in this book like:

Lintu rakensi pesänsä puuhun – The bird built its nest in the tree
Anna ei jotunut vankilaan - Anna didn't have to go to prison
Pysyykö ilma kirkkaana? - Will the air stay clear?
Menkööt, he sinne, me jääme kotiin – Let them go there, we are staying at home Sinä päivänä aurinko paistoi – On that day the sun shone

They don't seem dodgy, but they just don't sit right with my English ears. Anyway, that was my afternoon sorted, getting ever so closer to finally grasping the entire Finnish case system. Anyway, I went for a walk around my University campus today. I've added two of my favourite pictures, just cos I want to show you what a nice day it was. It was, however, quite cold, so I am looking forward to the days where I can lie on the grass with my friends, look up at the clouds, talk about pesky and annoying lecturers, and dream our summer away.

I would have had loads of nice pictures because the tress are starting to bloom, shards of pollen float on shafts of light that edges its way between the tree trunks, the other colours are coming out to play. But round here, you look wierd if you're not taking a picture of yours and your mates foreheads inside a nightclub. I was taking the first picture, when some random Lithuanian girl who is on my friends course stopped by and asked why I was taking pictures of "no clouds". The pictures are, in any case, the lake on my university campus. It's been said 'round these parts that we have one of the nicest campuses in the country. I'd like to think so :-)

One thing I have realised though, is that my rent next year is £975 for the first term, wheras this year it was £1635 (bit of a difference there!), which means I am 100% going to Helsinki the first weekend after my 21st (which will be mid-October because of stupid uni). Theres no reason for me not to go. Akateeminen Kirjakauppa here I come!

I can be your personal Helsinki tour guide. :>

Also, just in case this was a mistake printed in the book: there is no comma in menköt he sinne.

Oh that would be nice! Be prepared for me to take you up on that! :D

And unfortunately, that is a mistake in the book. Good God, Fred Karlsson. Wtf.

Aahaha, oh Fred Karlsson. He still teaches at my uni. Expect strange examples from him. I have this one book on general linguistics by him, and these are my favourite examples from it:
- the men tied the mother and daughter up, bashed the father and left him in the forest
- ilmari's sister was hit on the head very hard

I obviously know a lot of places here that they don't mention in travel guides, so I'd love to show you around.

The men tied the mother and daughter up, bashed the father and left him in the forest - also shocking!

And thats so kick-ass! *thumbs up* Thanks! :D

Hello.

I was just wondering if we could be lj-friends? :)

and I wanted to answer to the comment you posted on translateplase community: you shouldn't feel awful or guilty! It would be nice if I could help you somehow as I'm very fond of English. I started to study English at the university last autumn. It's interesting to see that someone else is so crazy about languages too! :) and I like the way you write Finnish. I had completely forgotten the verb "huilata". It is a nice verb, sometimes you forget how rich your native language can be because you use it all the time.. :)

We can of course; you are someone who has helped me out with Finnish a lot. :)

Oh, I wish I could, But I can't take credit for writing Minä istun iloissani ja annan surun huilata, it's apparently an old Finnish proverb, but it described my life pretty accurately. :)

How are your English studies at university going? :)

Nice! Oh, I forgot to mention that my journal is in Finnish, I hope you don't mind? At least it's a good practice for you ;) I've been planning to write in English again too since I should use it more than I do at the moment.

A Finnish proverb! that's good to know. Where did you find it?

My English studies are going well, thank you for asking :)
It has been a lot of work and I've got lot's of exams to come but it has been very interesting and rewarding :)

Oh haha, no way is my Finnish upto reading journals. I can only just understand Kettu juoksi tien poikki and Tässä ruuassa ei ole makua, ja tässä pöydässä on vain kolme jalkaa!

My Finnish is pitiful :(

Sorry, I also meant to say I'm glad your studies are going well. I have exams soon too, and if I died right now, I would wake up in hell and still have to revise for them :(

I like that analogy, I stole it from my friend! :)

Hey,
This is strange, but what you wrote in your journal is almost exactly what I dreamed last night. I dreamed that I traveled to England with some friends, and I met you there, and we walked all around a University. We also walked around water, but it was more like a narrow lake that wrapped around the edge of the University. And then at the end of the day, we went to a mall, picked out clothes and then went to a club. When I woke up I thought it was so odd that I would dream about going all the way to England to walk around a University. Very odd; just thought I'd share.

Oh thats spooky!!
Why would you come all the way to England to walk around a university? I live two minutes away from it and stil cba going a lot of the time!! :)

Did you have a good weekend in the end then? Even though it was like five days ago!! :-/ Sorry!!

I did have a good weekend. The upcoming weekend promises to be one of the best ever. You can't combine Panic at the Disco and Myrtle Beach, and not have an awesome trip. I hope to get a lot of great pics; maybe I can post them next week.

hmm.maybe i was being a bit sarcastic with the 'walk around a univ." comment. In reality, I love walking around my Univ. in Boone, and love walking around UNC's campus in Chapel Hill. I think Carolina has one of the prettiest campuses ever.

I'll look forward to seeing them.

Incidentally, I'm in the middle of writing a letter in reply to a very pretty letter I got just an hour ago! :)

Oh, on UNC's campus, there is something called the Old Well. Its at the center of the campus. Its probably the best known image of the University; beautiful in the spring. I think it was modeled after a well at Versailles. hmm..maybe I'll post a pic of my campus sometime soon

You've obviously not been to York University. :D
(All the pictures I can find of it are of the campus maps rather than photos of it in real life, so I obviously can't prove that York is rather nice...)

So which Nottingham do you attend? Trent or t'other?

Yestdy's (that might be how a lot of people say it around here, but that's actually a typo!) weather was strange. It rained in the morning when I went into town, and my legs got drenched, and then it was really sunny and hot coming back home again! Then it did the same thing in the afternoon... I just wish it would make its mind up, personally.

NO I DO NOT GO TO TRENT!!!
Trent was the polytechnic so they do arty degrees, psychology, media and law. The common degrees. I'll pretend you didn't try and bracket me with NTU.

I did see York, when I went for my interview. I hated it. The buildings were awful and old, and the grounds were a bit dishevelled. :(

The weather is really annoying me too atm. Rain, sun, hail, wind - all on a cloudless day.

Besides, you could quite easily have mentioned it earlier in your reply about not being able to live in a house with Matt -- IIRC you said something like "there are two universities in Nottingham and Matt's in the other one".

You could have replaced "the other one" with "Trent". :)

I love the flower smell recently. :)

The sheer amount of daffodils across the street mean it's almost always wafting through.
