I have some photocopied sheets of English games in my useful sheets folder, and I've been trying them out, and my class absolutely love them. I want to buy the book, but I have absolutely no idea what book they're from, because the photocopy of the front page has torn off, and the name isn't printed along the edges of any pages. It was published after the 80s, judging by some of the content, and isn't that new. There are so many similar books on Amazon, none with preview pages, that could be the book, so I'm seeing if my description rings any bells with any of you.

There are around 50 games in the book, with cards and game pieces to photocopy at the back. I played one today with my class, which involved half the class being dodgy estate agents, who are trying to flog slightly odd houses to the other half of the class, who are playing characters such as a lion tamer or a deposed king, who have rather specialised needs in a new home. There's other games such as a story-telling domino one, with a choice of sci-fi or fairy tale illustrations; a game where the students are robot salespeople; a game called "yuppies" where everyone tries to outboast each other and lots of detective and guessing games.

Ring any bells with people?

Odd example of world English

I'm trying to figure out where this website, FemLive, is based. It calls itself a "women's lifestyle magazine."

India? Somewhere in Europe? English does not appear to be the first language of the writers. I clicked on "About Us" but received a blank page.

This, for example: "Marriage of Madonna and Guy Ritchie is being discussed in press for a long already . One asserted that the pair wishes to part, others denied this information. Now the final decision of spouses became known."

Anyone have any idea? My guess is India, but I'm prepared to be wrong.

Tomorrow I'm finally getting rid of this god-awful overgrown fringe that has too many months hanging from it and going back to the messy-torn style:

I know I am the size of a mouse and resemble a rodent, no need to bring it up.

I'm slightly worried 'cause the hairdresser I'm seeing is an old classmate of mine and I know she hasn't been in the business for long. I hope she'll know what she's doing. Then again, my fringe resembles a toupee when it's clean and a cap when it's greasy, so you can't get much lower than this.

It's 11°C and somewhat miserable outside, but I feel good about life and myself and things. I should cycle to the other side of the river to the big red farmhouse of Annu's family. I promised to giver her my old phone since hers is dead and her phone dying also complicates my life considerably. The covers of my old phone are lilac and have pansies on them because I'm a rodent who likes dresses and flowers and Take That and has squirrel and strawberry stickers on her shoes, it's gonna be hilarious to see her use it 'cause she's a tough girl who hates everything that I like and thinks me a pussy.

This thing has been circling around from the longest time, so here you go:

Ask me a question about each/any of the following:

1. Friends
2. Sex
3. Music
4. Drugs
5. Love
6. LiveJournal

No matter how rude, sexual, or confidential. Then post this in your journal and see what questions you get asked.

I've always been super-open about everything in this journal, so I'm not sure if there's much left to ask, but if there is, feel free to do so. Anonymous comments are also fine, I don't care.

Bilingual word play

  • Jul. 9th, 2008 at 2:43 AM
My cousin told me this earlier. It's kind of silly, but interesting in it's own right.

My cousin: "Where did coco nut?"

And I'm thinking "where did coconut? That makes no sense." I shrug at her, and she says كوكو نط من الشباك (hopefully that's all spelled right)

Explanation for those who don't speak arabic: نط (nut) is jumped. Coco is apparantly some cartoon monkey whom I've never heard of before this. So the question is "where did coco jump?" but with the last word in Arabic, and the answer is "from the window."

This is the first I've ever heard of any word play using two languages simultaneously, and I'm wondering if any of you know of other examples to share for the fun of it.

Edit: Arabic Keyboard can be found here.

Life... *sigh*

After a lot of thinking, I realized that my life is a chaos recently. It's really interesting how I haven't noticed the craziness in my life. I could only tought about it after [info]gyen_gaoltosing's comment to one of my entries and my boyfriend complaining that I've been so tired and busy for a while that I deserve some sleep at least. Then I asked about what my other friends thought about my life recently and it seems that I'm the idiot of the group for not even realizing how terrible my life has been.

I saw a dream last night. I quited work in my dream and pretty cool about it. I think that much thinking about life makes you this.It was weird coming to work after that dream this morning. :P I wonder how can I put my life on a decent line. Can't wait for October...

What the fuck was that? I have no idea. Mastoura from being tired and I miss my gomenos! And I want to sleep/read/play baglama/listen to more rebetika, cause we all know I don't get enough of that, and make malakia and... bzzz'zzz. Manga? Where are you! Oh, I know. I'll go to Piraeus in my sleep and... Later. *smile*

This incredibly random and pointless entry is brought to you by the letter T, for tired.

Today I heard a man on the news say that he learned English by watching movies (without any classes). I went and found a website broadcasting Arabic television because I thought maybe I could work on getting better by watching it in the same way that the man on the news did.

Then I realized that maybe he watched movies with subtitles and that's how he got good.

(1) Have you or anyone you know ever improved your language skills significantly just by listening to t.v. or movies in the target language? Or do you need subtitles for that to work?

(2) Do you know of any good Arabic movies with English subtitles?

Thanks.

Wow... Just wow. Got this from a friend's list. I'm truly speechless right now, seriously! When I read the beginning line of "just when you thought you heard everything" I was only half interested. By the end of the article, I'm thinking the Semon's and Zahopolous scandals look trivial when compared to this.

If they do this, I am honestly and truly leaving this Gods Forsaken country. Ellada may take the shirt off my back and the food off my table, but at least I'll be free to die or live in the streets in peace. And this, my dear friends, is how the mangas is born. This is, mark my words, the birth of a new rebetika, of new fear and hiding and. Wow. I'd better go take a shower before the feds come to my door. Yes, you motherfuckers, that is a Greek flag and a baglama. Now get lost! Eleftheria i thanatos!

Two questions:

1. What is it called to use "for + infinitive" such as "if there was a worthy cause for to give to"

2. What is it called to use 'what' in place of 'that' or 'who' ex." The cat what had a hat."

thank you very much!

Religious Videos

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 6:22 PM
I sent this to Hellenic Recons, but think some of you guys might be able to help.
"Geia sas pali,

Short this time. I'm just wondering if anyone could help me find some good videos on youtube or another site for our religion. I'm posting only here cause I'm looking for things mostly of a reconstructionist nature, though something that's a little improvised is ok too. Just trying to avoid the newage stuff for right now. I typed in "Hellenic Polytheism", "Hellenismos", and am planning on "Hellenic paganism", and "Hellenism" (all without quotes). But so far, they've all been too visual for me, with no words spoken. I don't mind if you include these in your suggestions, since these are meant to show my friends, but please give me a brief description of what's going on. Also, I have a video up incase you see it. I'm Magkisa83. But anyway, for myself, I'm hoping to find something I can appreciate so I can actually hear how others worship.

Thanks,
Tiffanitsa"

Thoughts on The Gods and the Universe

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 6:21 PM
*Crossposted. My friend and I are looking for all different answers and opinions thoughts here.*
Geia sas,

Wow. I don't even know where to start with this, but I'll try. Sorry for the huge jumbled post. or a few weeks now, I've been speaking on and off with a man named Mohammed. He's a devout Muslim and very respectful. But he's also someone who loves to debate in the true Hellenic sense of the word. So every time, we talk, it's about religion. We'll have a conversation and then in the next one, try to tie up any loose ends. He wants to try to prove to me that the religion of Islam is true, and I want to try to prove, not necessarily that Hellenic Polytheism is The True Religion (tm), but that nothing about The Gods or his God can be proven. I'm trying to go in order here, but I must skip around a bit and some of this is happening now. We started with the creation of the universe. He told his version and I tried my best to condence the Theogony for him. But we quickly moved from religion to science. For the record, I don't know much about science other than fringe sciences and the paranormal. We discussed the possibility of the big bang theory. HIs questions became something like "who was the one who created this? What was there before chaos or before the world existed?" He said that he's not trying to ask me to describe it but to agree that either something created it or it was formed/created by chance. We discussed the two possibilities and though we agreed that no one could ever truly know, we decided it was created. So again, we came full circle to trying to describe the creators. I tried the religious approach and he did the same, but then, I told him the story of the mortal woman who loved Zeus and how her wish was to see him in all his glory, but how when that wish was granted, she died because his power was so great. Not fit for mortal eyes. But we also decided that there must be some kind of truth, regardless of what it is and that there can only be one truth. All faiths, we said, are equal in this context because each believed that his/her faith is the right one. I clarified and said that I believed mine was the right one for me, not necessarily that it's the right one for everyone. We then agreed that if there was a religion which could be proven by the heart and by logic, it would be the best one. I explained that I separate between religion and science. Not that they're totally different, but it's hard to totally follow Theogony etc and ignore science or to totally ignore our sacred texts and be Hellenic Polytheists. It's difficult to discuss this purely from a religious standpoint because it can't be proven and both of us have our views. Also, there's still alot I need to learn about my religion. But purely from science, we'd get into the logic mess and then we'd be stuck there. So anyway, we discussed dogma (meaning a very strong feeling for something that nothing could change). I said that I feel that way about my country (Hellas) and my religion and that no one and nothing could change my mind. So here's where the questions to all of you come in. He asked me, suppose someone believes in a tree or a stone. That person prays to the object and their prayers get answered. My friend prayed to Allah and his prayers were answered. Who answered the prayers? I said, in his case, it was Allah, since that's the being to whom he addressed the prayers. But what about the guy who prayed to the stone or the tree? So then, I got a little crazy in my theory and brought up something from a previous conversation. What if the world was created by some kind of forces, energy forces that we can't hear/see. If so, perhaps, it was these that answered the man with the stone or the tree, since he didn't address a particular deity. He tried to bring in all sorts of science, Einstein and energy versus material,. But in order to not get stuck in the "who created the creator" debate, we moved on. I brought up spirits and how, even according to the sciences, they mess up electromagnetic recording material when they're present, but he doesn't believe in spirits. So then, he started telling me his version of creation and about the oneness of God etc. And as he talked, and even as I'm writing this, a funny thing happened and is continuing to happen within me. I began thinking of the big bang theory, how everything was this big mass and then expanded out, and I felt truly close to the Earth, the Stars, the Sun, the Wind and the Moon, even the stone and the tree. They're all Gods or have something of The Gods in them. It was as if it took science and Islam to make me step back and really appreciate The Gods more. But a question kept pressing at me and it's one that as a mortal, I can't answer. I said that perhaps the reason why there are so many religions is because whatever power's out there appear to different people in different forms, just as Zeus did in that text. Perhaps, it's because they want us to grow, to debate, to form our own opinions and societies. I'd really and truly love an oracle on this, if it's not being presumptuous. I mean, if it's respectful, I'd love to hear what The Gods have to say. Why do they not show themselves to everyone, but only to a few like those of us who follow them? Why do they allow all different religions, along with the pain and suffering they might cause? That kind of thing. While talking, I came to another conclusion just now. He asked me
if The gods want us to go astray. I think he was talking about worshipping other gods. My answer, in general was, "The Gods don't necessarily have to care for us. That's not from me, but from my religion. They don't have to love us or to be merciful. We weren't created out of love or given the world because we're special. It's up to us to do what we think is right and to find out the answers for ourselves" But I also said that if we're devoted trying to worship the gods as best as we could, that They'd most likely let us know if we're doing something wrong, sometimes subtly and sometimes with greater force. That's why oracles are a good way to learn what They want from you.

Finally, we got down to the point of logic versus religion and I explained that logic and religion are sometimes two different things. If you try to use one to explain the other, you'll be confused. It's like love. We know it exists because we feel it but we can't truly explain it, why we choose who we do, why we do the seemingly illogical things we sometimes do when in love. But yet, he claims that he can explain Islam with logic and that he can prove my religion to be wrong. So I'm looking for an answer to this, which may mean that you should e-mail me offlist if you're really planning on getting into Islam, cause I don't wanna get in trouble. And this isn't to bash any religion. It's an honest and heartfelt debate in which we're trying to grapple with very difficult topics. Oh boy, now we're discussing the muses and whether to believe them. I think I'd better send this before we open up another one. Dear Hermes, please grant me the ability to speak clearly and to think quickly and deeply, to follow you and the Olympions properly in all I say and do and to have sharper understanding.

Sas efharisto,
Tiffanitsa
PS. Got out of it by saying that The Gods themselves don't always tell the truth, and even if something comes from them directly, it could also be a matter of their individual opinions on the matter or their personalities. *smile* I love it when Hermes helps me. Yes! Just got him on personal experience and how it's never wrong! And on that note, sending.

Singles mit Niveau

At a German site I was visiting I found an advertisement for this dating agency: 'Elite Partner - Singles mit Niveau', where, so it seems, one might be able to make the acquaintance of some classy young lady such as a Journalistin or Designerin. May ask people from German-speaking lands, does this sort of thing (P.S. I mean use of language) set your teeth on edge? Or do you just get used to it?

Today I have been very happy and bored. Saku & I were little adventurers, we climbed onto things by the river and talked about clouds using stupid noises ("And those that are like...TA-DAAH!"). My lip gloss stained my liquorice and tasted really bad, I hope I've never kissed anyone wearing it.

Well, hi everyone

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 10:01 PM
I have to say I'm very confused about Livejournal because I started here about a week ago and I keep posting the weirdest things on accident, so if I like, send you a picture of my sister's cat eating a sock or something, I'm sorry for that.

So hi, I'm Mia, and as you can hopefully see from my photo, I'm a girl. Or if you thought I was a guy I must have been a very odd looking guy so thanks for that. My hair is a little messed up in that picture so i look kind of emo. It's okay. I'm really a nice person and I'd like to meet nice people but I don't know where to begin so I thought I'd give this a shot. So add me as your friend if you are even a little confirmed I'm not a total psycho who takes pictures of other people's cats and sends them around. I myself don't even know how to add friends, or I've never tried, because I don't really want my REAL friends to like, find this, so now  I don't even have ny friends here yet, except the Goat.

Oh, and I'm 17 and still go to school but I don't care who you are and how old you are and who you have maybe killed as a revenge or for other reasons, as long as you are nice I will like you. Well, maybe not the killing part.. But if you ad me I'll ad you and THEN I'll send you a picture of my sister's car eating a sock. Once more, I'll be sorry for that.

Well, let's give this a shot :> Though I don't think I did this right..
There was a quote which was popular with my crowd when I was in college, which I must have written out at least a dozen times, and yet cannot reconstruct without (I'm sure) a million embarrassing errors now.

As near as I can reconstruct it, the quote went, "A nul âge on ne philosophe plus volontier qu'à vingt ans, et surtout vers quatre heurs du matin."

Can anyone fix it for me - correct accent marks and all? I want to quote it in a post, and I'd prefer not to look stupid.

Extra points if anyone knows whether I'm remembering correctly that the source of the quote was Barthes.

Many thanks. I can still speak French moderately well for expressing my needs (if not my thoughts) and not completely mangling pronunciation, and I can scrape along in reading it, but my audio comprehension is rotten (not practicing) and when I try to write, all those little details that I can slip by in speaking suddenly become important... There's nothing like trying to write in French to make me remember how little I actually know the language.

Puns

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 9:59 AM
This question was initially posed by my mom, but I became interested when I couldn't give her the answer. Do puns exist in languages besides English? I was trying to think if I'd ever heard of any in Spanish (or even if there was a word for "pun"), but came up blank. I'm specifically interested in Spanish, but I'll take examples in other languages with explanations.

Thanks!

Первые мысли о работе

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 6:49 PM

I'm bored. It's the coldest July in 13 years. I hope next week will be warmer, Teemu is taking me on a picnic to Seurasaari. On Friday I told him that I think wasps are a lot scarier than bumblebees because bumblebees are fat and silly and you can't take them seriously. My name is Siiri and I really know how to embarrass myself on a date. Björk cancelled her concert in Helsinki. Our youngest dog is a true Finn: she likes to be whipped with a vihta in the sauna.

Fucking Get Your Appointments Straight!

I wanna kill these gods damned fucking sons of bitches! Seriously! My appointment was for today! Tuesday! at 4:30 PM. MOm worte down Thursday at 5:45! So what does the fucking receptionist have? TYesterday at 5:45, specifically after she told me that the doctor only stays on Tuesdays and Thursdays! I'm not that fucking mastoura! I'm just glad we don't have to pay for this shit. Otherwise, I'd make up some new koutsavakika and maybe find someone who's willing to get physical. I don't take bullshit lightly, especially when it comes to something I care about. I mean, no, it's not like I'll be seeing Spiros today and we've gotta fuck now, but that's not the point. When you tell me you're gonna be here or that you want me on a certain day, fucking put that day down in your motherfucking brain and get it right on paper! Anyway, work now. Btw, I taped that rebetika show. More on that when I put away the virtual knife/fist.

I just  went for my eye test and got to pay £22 for the sodding thing. I'm not covered by the NHS anymore, since I'm 20, although I'm still in full-time education. Humph. But the good news is that my perscription hasn't changed, so I don't need new glasses. Woo. I also have a slight astigmatism in one of my eyes.

The deluge continues. I wish the rain would stop. Not that I would go anywhere if it did, just it would be nice to sit in the garden and do a bit of reading. It would be better if it finished before the moffetjes came up on Thursday for the north-east adventure.

My parents came home from Glasgow yesterday. They said they'd seen a couple of things I would've liked but failed to buy them, so mammy's said that she'd buy me a mac (coat, unfortunately) to make up for it. Good times. Acne have a sale on, fyi. Although the only sizes still avaliable are fatty fatty bum bum ones.

Hi, first of all, sorry for my poor english. 8-)

I have a technical text where I found phrase, which I'm unable to translate. Can you please explain the meaning of a term "hydraulic jacket-levelling devices". I think it's part of lifting crane, but i don't know which one 8-)

Thanks a lot in advance!
